Admissions FAQ

How do I submit an application?

New applicants will need to create a new applicant account in our Admissions System. An individual parent email address will be necessary for each applicant account.

Applicants who have previously submitted an application will have access to their previously created applicant account.

When creating a new account, please be sure to enter the student applicant’s first and last name, not the parent’s. When entering your email address, however, please use a parent email address, as all communication from the Admissions Department, including interview-audition placement activity schedule information, will deliver to the email address you provide.

Please fill out the student information section completely. Current transcripts and the applicant’s birth certificate/passport should be included.

My application included all the required documents. Why does my checklist show the message: “Documents Not Received” next to a red X?

Verifying submitted documents is part of the application process. Once the documents have been verified as correct, the applicant’s checklist will show the message: “Documents Received” next to a green check mark.

My child attends a school that does not give out grades. Is it still necessary to provide a transcript?

Yes. All applicants, including those who are currently attending home school or a school that does not have a traditional grading system, must submit a current, up-to-date transcript.

Are services available for special needs students?

Yes. All applicants who have received or are currently receiving special services must submit appropriate documentation during the enrollment process, after they have received their acceptance notification. All special services information is confidential and is not used as part of the interview-audition placement activity process.

Can I apply to both California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley and Orange County School of the Arts?

Yes. Applicants who wish to be considered for admission to both California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley and Orange County School of the Arts are welcome to submit an individual application for each school. It is necessary for applicants to attend individual interview-audition placement activities for each school and conservatory they are applying to.

How will I be notified of my child’s interview-audition placement activity schedule?

When the interview-audition placement activity is scheduled, a confirmation email containing the date, time, and location of the interview-audition placement activity will be sent to the primary email address used to set up the applicant account. A reminder email will be sent a few days before the scheduled interview-audition placement activity. The applicant’s dashboard will also show the interview-audition placement activity date. Please use a parent’s email address when setting up your applicant account.

I submitted an application for my child last year. Do I need to submit a new student application for the 2019-2020 school year?

Yes. A new application and interview-audition placement activity are required.

I am a current student who would like to switch conservatories. Do I need to re-apply?

Yes. A new application and interview-audition placement activity are required. Your spot in your current conservatory is reserved until you accept an offer of enrollment in a different conservatory.

Do you allow Shadowing?

No. We are a closed campus and non-CSArts-SGV students may not visit classes at any time during the academic or conservatory day.

I am having trouble completing the online application. Who do I contact for help?

You can contact Janet Infiesto, Admissions Coordinator, at, and she will make sure you have access to all the resources you need to complete the application.

When can I apply, and what is the application deadline, for the 2019-2020 school year?

Applications for the 2019-2020 school year will be available online in mid-October 2018. An applicant’s interview-audition placement activity will be scheduled in the order that applications are received, so please consider applying as soon as you are able.

If your completed application is received by our Early Admissions Deadline of January 20, 2019, you will be guaranteed priority scheduling for an interview-audition placement activity and, should there be more applicants than space in your desired conservatory/level, you will be eligible for entry in the public lottery for the remaining reserved spaces.

We will continue to accept applications after the Early Admissions Deadline only until enrollment is full.

Interview-audition placement activities begin in January and conclude mid-February. All applicants will be notified of their interview-audition placement activity results no later than early March.

Opportunities to attend an interview-audition placement activity in late spring or summer are rare and are only scheduled if there is a conservatory need.

What documentation do I need to include?

All applicants must submit a copy of an official birth certificate or passport. Please note that religious and hospital certificates do not qualify as legal birth certificates.

Students applying to grades 7 and 8 will submit their up-to-date 2018-2019 report card during the enrollment process. Students applying to grades 9 and 10 will submit current grades with their application. Students applying to grades 11 and 12 will submit complete high school transcripts, including a current progress report, along with their application submission.

Depending on the conservatory you are applying to, an art portfolio and/or YouTube link(s) may be required, along with the application submission. Please carefully review the interview-audition placement activity requirements for the conservatory you are applying to.

Incomplete applications will be returned and delayed in processing.

Why do you require a copy of a student’s birth certificate and transcript?

We ask for a copy of the student’s birth certificate or passport in order to confirm their legal name for entry into the California Longitudinal Pupil Achievement Data System (CALPADS). This is the database California uses to track all student academic records.

We ask for a copy of each high school student’s current transcript to ensure that we are building an academic schedule that will fit the student’s needs.

My child is very talented, but struggles academically. Will CSArts-SGV be a good fit?

CSArts-SGV provides a rigorous college-preparatory academic program. While the school’s faculty and staff are committed to supporting the educational needs of each and every student, the students themselves are expected to make a commitment to their academics as well as their conservatory classes.

In our experience, students who are not maintaining at least a 2.0 GPA in a traditional school setting will likely have trouble succeeding in our extended school day.

Can I apply for more than one conservatory?

Yes. For the 2019-2020 school year, prospective students may apply to a maximum of two conservatories or programs. The appropriate conservatory form must be submitted with the application, and the applicant must attend a separate interview-audition placement activity for each conservatory in order to be considered for admission. If the applicant is offered enrollment in multiple conservatories, the applicant must select one conservatory for enrollment.

How do I check on the status of my child’s application?

Applicant status information can be viewed in your applicant dashboard. If additional information is needed, we will contact you via email. The email address used to set up your applicant account is the primary email and will be used for all communication from the Admissions Department. Please use a parent email address when setting up your applicant account.

Can my interview-audition placement activity be rescheduled?

No. It is not possible to reschedule the interview-audition placement activity. Interview-audition placement activity space is limited. All interview-audition placement activities take place beginning in January and conclude mid-February. All applications are processed in the order received. Submitting your application early will provide you the opportunity to receive your interview-audition placement activity date far in advance.

My child was “waitlisted” last year. Do I need to submit a new student application for the 2019-2020 school year?

Yes. A new application and interview-audition placement activity are required.

Is it possible to visit or arrange a tour of your school?

Preview Days are held on the school’s campus three times each year. Prospective students and families will receive an overview of the academic and arts conservatory programs, and have the opportunity to meet with conservatory directors. Private tours are not available.

How much does it cost to attend?

CSArts-SGV is a tuition-free, donation-dependent, public charter school. No student is admitted or denied based upon financial capacity. Each school year we must fundraise for the operation costs of the different arts conservatories, and we rely on parents and the community-at-large to help us reach our fundraising goals.
