Admissions FAQ

I submitted an application for my child last year. Do I need to submit a new student application for 2018-2019?

Yes, a new application and interview-audition placement activity are required.

When is the best time to apply?

Interview-audition placement activities are scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis, so applying as early as possible is advised. Interview-audition placement activities are held in February and March. Generally, all interview-audition placement activity space is filled by early February. Please submit your application as soon as possible. If your completed application is received by our Early Admissions Deadline of February 2nd you will be guaranteed priority scheduling for an interview-audition placement activity and, should there be more applicants than space in your desired conservatory / level, you will be eligible for entry in the public lottery for the remaining reserved spaces.  All applicants will be notified of their placement activity results no later than mid-April.  We will continue accepting applications after the Early Admissions Deadline only until enrollment is full.

How much does it cost to attend?

The California School of the Arts - San Gabriel Valley is a tuition free, donation dependent public charter school. No student is admitted or denied based upon financial capacity. Each school year we must fundraise for the operation costs of the different arts conservatories, and we rely on parents and the community-at-large to help us reach our fundraising goal.

Can a student apply for more than one conservatory?

Yes, for the 2018-2019 school year, prospective students may apply to a maximum of two (2) arts conservatories or programs. The appropriate conservatory form must be submitted with the application, and the applicant must attend an interview-audition placement activity for each conservatory applied to in order to be considered for admission.

Is it possible to visit or to arrange a tour of your school?

Preview Days are held on the CSArts-SGV campus three times each year, typically on a Saturday in October, November, and January. During Preview Day, prospective students and families will receive an overview of the academic and arts conservatory programs and have the opportunity to meet with conservatory directors. For additional information, please visit our Preview Days page.

What is the best way to keep informed of admissions deadlines and events?

All of our admissions-related deadlines and events appear on our Master Calendar.

Are services available for special needs students?

Yes, applicants who have received or are currently receiving special services must submit appropriate documentation during the enrollment process, after they have received their acceptance notification. All special service information is confidential and will not be used as part of the CSArts-SGV interview-audition process.

When can I apply, and what is the application deadline for the 2018-2019 school year?

Applications for the 2018-2019 school year will be available online in mid-October 2017.  Please apply as soon as possible. Applications are processed in the order received.  If your completed application is received by our Early Admissions Deadline of February 2nd, you will be guaranteed priority scheduling for an interview-audition placement activity.  Should there be more applicants than space in your desired conservatory/level, you will be eligible for entry in the public lottery for the remaining reserved spaces.  All applicants will be notified of their placement activity results no later than mid-April.  We will continue accepting applications after the Early Admissions Deadline only until enrollment is full.

Interview-audition placement activities take place in February and March.  Opportunities to attend an interview-audition placement activity in late spring or summer are rare and are only scheduled if there is a conservatory need.

My child was "wait listed" last year. Do I need to submit a new student application for 2018-2019?

Yes, a new application and interview-audition placement activity are required.

My child attends a school that does not give out grades. Is it necessary to provide a report card?

Yes, all applicants, including those who are currently attending home school or a school that does not have a traditional grading system, must submit the required grade reports, or the equivalent. Students in high school must submit a complete, current high school transcript, including progress grades. For detailed information, please visit our Admissions Requirements page.  Interview-audition placement activities will not be scheduled for applications submitted without the required grade reports.

How many students are accepted each year?

Our goal enrollment is 1,200 students for the 2018-2019 school year.

Do you accept students at mid-year?

Depending upon conservatory need, students can be accepted mid-year.  This year, we will accept new applications for spring semester.  Spring semester begins January 10, 2017.  A single interview-audition placement activity date has been scheduled for spring semester enrollment. To be consider for mid-year enrollment it is necessary to submit an application and attend the interview-audition placement activity scheduled on December 9, 2017.  There will be no make-up placement activity date for spring enrollment.

Do you allow shadowing?

No, we are a closed campus and non-CSArts-SGV students may not visit classes at any time during the academic or conservatory day.

What level of ability is required to be considered for admission?

Please visit our Admissions Requirements page to get an idea of what is expected.  Prospective students shall participate in an interview-audition placement activity to identify the appropriate level of placement in the conservatory to which they seek admission.  Please consider joining us for one of our up coming Preview Days.  Conservatory directors will discuss the interview-audition placement activity process.

My child is very talented, but struggles academically. Will CSArts-SGV be a good fit?

At CSArts-SGV, a rigorous, college-preparatory academic program is provided. While the school's faculty and staff are committed to support the learning of each and every student, the students themselves are expected to make a commitment to their academic as well as their conservatory classes. In our experience, students who are not maintaining at least a 2.0 G.P.A. in a traditional school setting will likely have trouble succeeding in our extended school day.
