General Giving Information

California School of the Arts – San Gabriel Valley (CSArts-SGV) is a tuition-free, donation-dependent public charter school. No student is offered or denied enrollment based upon financial capacity. Through a public-private partnership, the State of California provides funding for the academic instructional program offered at CSArts-SGV. In addition, we must raise approximately $2 million to fund the arts conservatory programs each year. We rely solely on generous contributions from our families, members of the community, and corporate partners to help us reach this goal.

The collective Parent Funding Agreement (PFA) pledges from all of our families determine the annual budget for each conservatory. Any pledge or donations you make will be allocated directly to your child’s individual conservatory budget.

All cash contributions to the school are fully tax deductible.

Parent Giving: Frequently Asked Questions

What does the State of California pay for?

CSArts-SGV expects to receive approximately $10 million from the State of California, depending on actual enrollment numbers. This funding is allocated as follows:

  • 100% of expenses related to Academic Instruction, including teacher and support staff salaries, health benefits, classroom supplies, and professional development.
  • 75% of Security expenses, 75% of Technology expenses, 75% of General & Administrative expenses, 75% of Capital expenses, 75% of Facilities expenses, and 75% of Debt Service (Mortgage Payment) expenses.

Do these arts conservatory fees include performance opportunities?

Yes. Each conservatory director will determine the performance calendar for the 2020-2021 school year. Additional performance fees may be required for specific performance opportunities.

What is a matching gift?

Many corporations offer a matching gift program. For each dollar donated to the school, your employer may match your donation. Matching gifts will also be allocated to your child’s arts conservatory program.

What happens if I don't donate?

Conservatory budgets are based solely on collective parent commitments of cash donations and fundraising activities.

  • If there are conservatories with low parent donations/fundraising commitments, those conservatory programs will be budgeted to have a modified or reduced program.
  • If there are conservatories with parent donations/fundraising commitments that are dramatically less than budgeted, those conservatory programs may have the number of instructional days reduced to compensate for the lack of funding.
  • If your personal situation changes during the year and you are unable to fulfill your commitment, please contact Amanda Quinlan, Family Liaison, at (657) 321-4000, ext. 60011 or amanda.quinlan@sgv.csarts.net.

What is the school’s estimated budget for the 2020-2021 school year?

Based on an enrollment of 1,200 students, the projected total annual operating budget will be approximately $13 million for the school year. CSArts-SGV will receive approximately $10 million from the State of California, and expects to raise approximately $3 million through fundraising activities.

What does the arts conservatory funding pay for?

CSArts-SGV must raise approximately $3 million for the 2020-2021 school year to pay for 100% of Arts Instruction expenses and the remaining 25% of expenses as listed above. All donations are allocated specifically to your child’s arts conservatory program.

If I want to donate additional money, where does that money go?

Additional donations and fundraising activities above the amount indicated on the Parent Funding Agreement will go directly toward your child’s arts conservatory program.

How do I solicit funds from private donors?

Many CSArts-SGV parents and students have sent letters to friends, family, neighbors, and colleagues requesting donations. All donors will receive tax receipts each January for the prior calendar year. A sample letter is provided on this page. If a child’s name is noted on a donation, that donation will be allocated specifically to your child’s arts conservatory program.

What are the volunteer opportunities for the 2020-2021 school year?

Sign up for schoolwide volunteer opportunities at sgv.csarts.net/familylink. Volunteers are needed at the school during school hours, but many jobs can be done on weekends or in the evenings, at school performances, by making phone calls or stuffing envelopes, etc. There is a volunteer opportunity to fit almost every time segment and skill level.
