John Blaylock

Director of Creative Writing

John Blaylock holds an MFA from the Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts in New York City. He has written for theatres across the country and is currently collaborating with several writers in both Southern California and New York City. In the summer of 2014, Mr. Blaylock worked as William Finn’s assistant at Barrington Stage Company in Pittsfield, Massachusetts, helping to workshop “Romance in Hard Times,” by William Finn and Rachel Sheinkin.

In 2015, Mr. Blaylock again worked as Finn’s assistant, this time at Encores! Off-Center, on their production of A New Brain, directed by James Lapine. Following A New Brain, Mr. Blaylock returned to Barrington Stage, this time to work on a singer-songwriter cabaret of his own material. He has also had work produced by Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA), Surflight Theatre, Sesame Street Live, Common Man Musicals, and Phoenix Theatre Company. He has guest lectured for Chapman University’s Graduate Student Workshop series, and has served as a teacher and assistant director of OCSA's Creative Writing Conservatory.

In addition to serving as the director of creative writing at CSArts, he is also a resident writer at Broadway On Tour (BOT) Children’s Theatre in Santa Ana, helping to create new one hour family musicals. Together with BOT, he has helped to workshop nine new musical theatre pieces over the past fifteen years, all with the help of young Orange County actors and their families. His holiday musical, A Christmas Show, has played on and off for over ten years in Southern California. He also continues to teach voice and musical theatre alongside Cathy Rigby at the McCoy Rigby Conservatory of the Arts.
